Summary: The 27th Icarius Royale Bombardiers are a regiment from the planet Icarius, and are a renowned artillery regiment known for their incredibly large and famous and ornate bombards and basilisks, and earth shakers that have been passed down through generations in the regiment’s history, and through the distinctive social caste system the regiment holds between its artillery crewmen of common birth and the haughty, but tough noble guard that are trained to the highest pedigree of defensive combat and hardiness to brave enemy assaults.
Strategically the 27th Royale Bomdardiers of Icarius are a rather pragmatic faction, preferring to be attached to line infantry regiments- but they are unique in that despite being a dedicated artillery regiment, they are famous and incredibly durable defenders of strategic points. Relying on their massive artillery guns to bombard enemy positions and armies, they have two dedicated roles in their regiment determined by social caste. Nobles wear ornate armour and are armed with plasma weaponry, mono rapiers and flamers whilst the crewmen are armed with laspistols and entirely focused on manning the guns, their roles exclusive of each other. The noble soldiers of Icarius would rather die fighting then surrender, having an intense obsession with honour. Even to the point of dueling offenders within the Imperium’s military in ritualized sword duels.
Whilst other regiments may look upon the Icarius Royale Bombardiers of the 27th with a bit of disgust for their pomposity, none would declare they are neither cowards nor incompetent in battle, and grudgingly respect them for their timely and magnificent bombardments. They are led by Louisiana Brouillard the 4th, the heir to the throne of Icarius; as it is tradition for the prince or princess to the throne to serve on the front like their foremothers and forefathers, a tradition dating back to the first of their dynasty, Leduc Brouillard.
Regimental History:
The history of the 27th Icarius Royale Bombardiers is a long and venerated one, going back before the days the Alfa Legion even settled on Swedesia. The 27th for the longest time was originally part of the personal army of Leduc Brouillard’s Bombardiers, which was one of the famed armies that defended against invading xenos such as Dark Eldar and Orkz and was well known in wars resulting in the planets unification under a single banner through the use of cunning artillery placement with guns that had been passed down through generations of the Brouillard family. The Brouillard governor dynasty was born of this conflict, and to this day the Royale Bombardiers have been one of the most famous regiments on Icarius.
In more recent wars, the 27th incarnation of the Royale Bombardiers fought bravely on Norwesia during the Nuckalavee Tyranid invasion, stemming a large portion of their invasion force with a stalwart defence alongside the Armoran line regiment the 73rd “Tommies”, which consequently ended up in the decisive bombardment of several synapse creatures that bought time for other Imperial forces to arrive and strike at the disorientated and bloodied Tyranid forces.
Headquarters/Homeworld:
The 27th Icarius Royal Bombardiers hail from Icarius, a planet whose governor is an absolute monarch. The society of Icarius is one of deep feudalism, whilst technological production exists, often devoted to the splendid cannons and hand crafted equipment of the military, normal citizens live day to day lives with simple machinery to plow fields and attend to other duties such as gong farming and mining, and other peasant tasks. The families of nobles on the planet have a long standing tradition of sending sons off to war, and proudly do so as in Icarian society, there is no other greater glory then having your serfs blast your prized family cannon onto your enemies and slicing them down if they dare try to remove you from your righteous gunner spot.
Recruitment:
Whilst Icarius does supply reasonable amounts of munitions and minerals to its tithe, Icarius also proudly sends its noble sons and daughters to war. Each noble house when sending off one of their sons or daughters supplies one of its own artillery gun(s) to go along with them, as well as a crew of trained serfs who are educated on how to man the gun to their best ability. Of which they do so with a relative pedigree of pride as the serfs too are often family property themselves, generations upon generations of serfs living and working as the most prestigious position a serf on Icarius could ever work in- manning one of the noble house’s venerated artillery. However not every noble family can send its own artillery gun, but they will always send their beloved sons and daughters some personal serfs to help with their time in wartime, to ensure they are at their peak condition. It is however very much a status symbol of how many guns one family can produce or grant their offspring, and the more guns one noble can bring to the field, the more prestige. This family affair is often a generational thing, with dedicated stewards who are often cousins or uncles and aunts to the family running the land if there is no sons or daughters around to govern fiefdoms.
Regimental Organization:
The Royal Bombardiers have technically remained unbroken, being named the 27th due to its generational existence. It is not a large regiment, only consisting of 1500 individuals, roughly 650 of those being nobles in fully decked out wargear and the rest being basic crewmen. The regiment is unusual in its organization as its Battery divisions are not divided equally, but solely due to the allegiance of whomever the noble is who owns the guns. Currently there are roughly 163 artillery guns in the 27th Icarius Royale Bombardiers. The Master of Ordinance of the regiment is also the regimental commander, who is Louisiana Brouillard, a rather calculative and cunning commander who delights in mastercrafting plans of utter destructive bombardment for her enemies. Squadrons of 10 men exist, with the Master of Ordinance being the direct and highest authority for all guns, but appointed sergeants in the crews also have a degree of authority but ultimate bely on the Master of Ordinance’s/Commander’s orders.
Nobles are required to have fancy moustaches, and if they cannot grow one, must draw one in with charcoal. Women are not exempt from this rule.
Wargear:
Due to the nature of the Royale Bombardiers, there is two equipment loadouts typically carried in the regiment. Crewman and noble respectively have their own distinct gear.
The uniform of the 27th Icarius Royale Bombardiers consists of a purple felt covered steel hat with red feather and ornate purple uniform and yellow cape, the colours of house Brouillard, as well as an ornate, gilded with gold carapace cuirass with personal family crest with the rest of the armour consisting of flak armour.
