The Alfa Legion
Summary: The Alfa Legion is a Second Founding chapter deriving from the Alpha Legion. They are very versatile and uncustomary in their warfare, often making use of experimental weaponry and abnormal tactics. They are considered radical and potentially dangerous by imperial forces not attuned to their ways.
Their unorthodox manners stems from their complete abandonment of psycho-indoctrination, preferring to mold their Marines through conventional discipline, age-old teachings and extravagances of entertainment and liquor when outside of battle. Only recently, their Companies have had their organizational doctrines changed drastically by a radical move from Chapter Master Alfabusa on the eve of his ascension to leader of the Chapter. Since then, these said Companies have worked to adapt to the changes, and more as time progressed with their settlement in Sector Skalholm and adaptation to the unique challenges of that region of isolated space, as well as the millennial-long project of bringing the chapter’s numbers up high. History: During the Horus Heresy, the 7th Chapter of the Alpha Legion broke off from their traitorous kin. Of reasons dubious to all scribes, 7th Chapter Master Alfarion had come into conflict with his Primarch(s?), leaving to instead aid the Emperor and his loyalists. During the Great Scouring that followed the Horus Heresy, they managed to earn the respect of the Space Wolves Legion during a long campaign against the Death Guard. After this campaign, the Chapter was to be sentenced by the Imperium’s Lord Commander, Roboute Guilliman. Like the uptight blue-veined ankle spanker he is, he would have certainly placed a harsh sentence on the loyalist Alpha Legionnaires, had not Leman Russ - perhaps surprisingly - intervened in the judgment. A compromise was reached, and the Legionnaires were to form a new Chapter as part of the Second Founding. In addition to this, they were to be watched with relentless scrutiny by an organization established as a security measure by Guilliman. This fraternity of inquisitorial stalkers would eventually become known as the Ordo Alfus. After this, the Alfa Legion came to be. A Space-faring chapter at first, Their name is often seen as a jab at their traitorous origins. They do not shroud their shameful past in secrets and lies. Instead, they embrace it and make it brazenly obvious that they are to remain a perpetual nuisance to the Alpha Legion and all their treacherous brethren, for the honour of their former heritage and the honour of the Imperium. As decades passed however, they were forgotten by the majority of the Imperium of Man - due in part to censorship by the Ordo Alfus and a number of other individuals in the Inquisition, out of embarrassment over rumoured ‘misconduct’ on the Alfa Legion’s behalf and it’s bewildering choice of Chapter name. Because of that, this particular chapter’s name is obscure, especially so because of it’s sometimes confusing similarity to that of the Alpha Legion. However, a millennia ago the Chapter has come to settle in the Skalholm Sector, in the relatively unexplored galactic north of Segmentum Obscurus. There, the Chapter has come to call Swedesia their new Chapter world and home, and as such their name has begun to spread. For better or worse, the Alfa Legion is now an organization that is widely known within the Sector itself, and has become a permanent garrison for the isolated region. Tactics: The Alfa Legion has always been known for its unorthodox methods of warfare, differing from other Chapters by at least a few means. The first, is the brazenly calm manner in which the Chapter would sometimes interact with other xeno races, sometimes going as far as to make use of mercenaries or even allying themselves with them temporarily to achieve certain goals. Many of the higher-ranking officers of the Chapter are even not below manipulating enemy xenos races to their own ends, having them fight among themselves or fight other enemies, although the tactic is generally frowned upon, even within the chapter itself - for it has potential to backfire immensely. Not to mention the fact that as a result, the chapter has a stigma of associating with xenos. For some, this is enough to be grateful for the fact that the Chapter itself has been censored from much of public record. For those within the Ordo Alfus and the Inquisition itself, this unhealthy habit of xeno interaction has warranted the censor. The second is the specialization of the Companies. During the long years as a space-faring chapter, The Alfa Legion has maintained a tradition inherited in part from the Space Wolves and in part, copied of other chapters, in which each of the 12 companies that make up the Chapter work independently of one another, all lead by the Chapter Master. There was however a near-catastrophe, for around a year or so before the Alfa Legion had come to settle in Skalholm, the chapter was on the verge of destruction by it’s own hands in civil war over the role of Chapter Master. At the conclusion of the war, a drastic and radical reorganization was issued forth by the new Chapter master, and since then the companies had kept to it, cooperating to defend against and destroy the enemies of man wherever they can be found and fought. The third attribute is the Chapter’s complete abandonment of modern psychological conditioning and most forms of subconscious hypnotherapy in favour of traditional methods and drug supplements. The reasons behind this is lost to time, but because of this, not only are marines of the Alfa Legion more liable to individual thinking and initiative, most of them must also take the longer route to learn at least some of their mental powers and skills granted by the gene-seed organs. Only some of the older and more experienced astartes of the Chapter have learned to use their body and mental abilities fully as a result. Of course, there are other consequences that come as a result of this as well, the worst case being complete dementia and erosion of true identity, or at best a form of eccentricity that is otherwise largely overlooked. The Fourth attribute is the naval expertise of the Chapter. During its 9 millennia of wandering across the galaxy, the chapter has been acknowledged as a great asset in naval warfare, despite their disproportionately small number of combat-capable vessels compared to typical Imperial Navy fleets. While this has rankled many an Imperial Navy admiral over the fact that the Chapter could hold out on it’s own against other fleets, many more have come to be relieved of that expertise, who has helped score many key naval victories in the Imperium’s history at large. The fifth and final attribute to the Chapter, is its specialization against the Greenskins. While the Orks are a common foe for the Chapter, because of WAAAGH Ymir that has crashed into Skalholm, the Chapter has gained a lot of experience in fighting the Orks to the point that it has become especially suited to the task of purging them from the Sector itself. Organisation: The Legion's Chapter Command consists of Alfabusa, the Legion's current Chapter Master (or the Alfa, as it is its traditional called), as well as the 15 Vaskalii, high ranking officers each carrying individual responsibilities. Directly under Alfabusa and part of these Vaskalii are the Captains, each leading their own respective Company, who are given the responsibility of overall deployment of the company and it’s training regimen and tactics. The Captains each have a single Company Champion that is, as most Company Champions are, exemplars of their Company - and are treated as their Captain’s right hand in most respects, as well as sole warriors who are obliged to always continue proving their worth on the battlefield. The Warden Chaplains are also regarded with similar seniority, although in comparison they are their respective Captain’s left hand, and are given a grim reputation of putting down potential heresy and betrayal, as well as acting as advisers. Underneath them, there are the Force Commanders - usually Veteran Sergeants who have been temporarily appointed to gather to themselves a Strike Force of 50 to 100 Astartes (making either a Demi-Plihort or a full Plihort) for the duration of a single campaign, although there have been occasions during which a Strike Force is maintained for long periods of time - some even permanently, and there are Force Commanders who are Chaplains, normal Sergeants, Epistolary Librarians and sometimes even esteemed Tech Marines or Apothecaries, though the latter two tend to be very rare cases. When multiple Force Commanders are sent on a single campaign, usually the most senior of them all would act as overall commander for the larger Campaign. Then there are of course the Sergeants, who lead squads of marines - usually five to ten, including the Sergeant themselves. They specialize depending on the company they are affiliated to, and are deployed when and where deemed necessary to execute the will of the Chapter. |

Forces: Each Company is dedicated to their own aspect of warfare, and as such do not often fight on their lonesome. They make use of their distinct tactics to compliment one-another on the battlefield, making up for their individual weaknesses. Despite that however, the character of the Strike Forces that are deployed is usually reflected by its commanding officer, be it Captain or Force Commander. For example 9th Company Force Commanders are more likely to coordinate the war from above, providing orbital and air support than 5th Company Force Commanders, who would opt to put themselves into defensive positions and use scorched earth tactics in support of their allies. As of now, the Chapter maintains a humongous chapter presence in Sector Skalholm as a culmination of a millennia long plan - 3600 Astartes approx spread across all the companies more or less equally, with some exceptions. For the moment, the chapter is starting to recover from the abrupt disappearance of the 6th company which resulted in over a 12th of the chapter going missing from action, thus slowly but surely bringing the new 6th Company back to fighting strength. The 1st Company is an exceptionally unique Company. With the exception of it containing the Chapter Master's Honour Guard. Essentially acting like an equivalent of the Deathwatch, it is substantially designed to allow members from different Companies to join one-another in small groups of marines similar to the Deathwatch Kill-teams, doing missions like targeting enemy infrastructure, securing assets, escorting diplomats etc. It’s Captain is as of yet, a largely enigmatic person in the Chapter, and so far only the Chapter Master knows anything of his identity. Size: 120 Marines. The 2nd Company possesses the biggest part of the Legion's motor pool. Vehicles and machinery such as Rhinos, Predators and even esteemed Land Raiders are all under explicit authority of the 2nd Company, the Tactical Squads forming mechanized forces. Size: 250 Marines The 3rd Company specialized in mechanized infantry, making use of Bikes and Razorbacks to quickly deploy and make use of hit-and-run tactics. Size: 320 Marines The 4th Company Designated as the Linebreaker Company, the 4th Company’s otherwise infantry-heavy company makes use of Super-heavy Vehicles including the Baneblade, The Crassus Armoured Transport and the Praetor Armoured Assault Launchers to break through enemy forces. Size: 200 Marines The 5th Company focuses on specialist troops that make use of chemical warfare and territory denial. One of the more experimental Companies, they cause disarray amongst enemy troops and are especially effective at infantry elimination as well as having an affinity for defensive and trench warfare, concentrating their firepower to the greatest effect. Size: 300 Marines The 6th Company were, much like the 5th Company, experimental in its use of wargear, but unlike the 5th, they were deployed offensively. Before it became lost in the warp, it primarily employed firepower tactics with heavy arms as well as use of experimental sonic weaponry. Because of Black and the majority of his company’s abrupt disappearance, the company has been rebuilding without the proper guidance of a captain, and has only now recently been brought back to Plihort Strength. Size (current): 100 Marines The 7th Company are employed when the opposition has potential psychological weaknesses. They specialize in psychological warfare and harassment through vox, terrorising the foe and finally coming down on them when they least expect it, eroding the resolve of the enemy for as long as they could until an optimal killing blow could finish them off, diving into Close-quarters for the kill. Size: 300 Marines The 8th Company make use of some heavy infantry units such as Centurions and Terminators, inserting them onto the field by drop-pods or other means to quickly fortify positions and bring heavy firepower to enclosed territories. Size: 300 Marines The 9th Company are in control of all Astartes warships in the Legion, essential for the entirety of the Legion to go anywhere. They are the main experts when it comes to all things fleet based. Size: 450 Marines The 10th Company is a Company used for the induction of initiates, used for scouting operations, gathering intel, guerrilla warfare and assassination if required. Thus it obviously has a high influx of Scouts - also known as "Scots" in the Legion. Size: 400+ Scots The 11th Company focuses on siege warfare and building fortifications. Many vehicles typically used in siege warfare are owned by the 11th Company. Size: 360 Marines The 12th Company is the Legion’s prime infantry assault Company, making use of jumppacks and teleporters to quickly make their way to the front lines and fight in glorious melee combat, to end campaigns and wars as quickly as possible, whether in a single battle, or through force of sheer will. Size: 300 Marines |

Notable Locations: The Legion makes its home on the planet of Swedesia. It is a frigid Death World that was sent into an ice age after the Legion’s largest Battle Barge, the Mighty Màchi Tavèrna, crashed into it. After this great crash, the Legion settled upon the planet and rebuilt the Màchi Tavèrna to become their new land based Fortress-Monastery. In time, the name of this Fortress-Monestary would regress from the former ship’s ancient name to that of it’s low gothic translation, “Battle Pub”. The Battle Pub itself had crashed and ended up next to a dormant Volcano called Eyjafjalla in the northern parts of the continent, so later on down the line, the dormant Volcano became incorporated into the Fortress-Monastery, it’s fire giving the fortress life via Thermal reactors within it’s core, and the hollowed out caverns within the dormant mountain playing host to the sounds of Forge-work and the hymns of machine-chant. While Swedesia is a world of inhospitable forests and ferocious mountain ranges filled with deadly beasts, the Legion has made it possible for civilians to live under their protection by building various civilian settlements across the continents, each with a corresponding Company maintaining and guarding it.
