Chapter Forge
Long ago when the Alfa Legion was a space-faring chapter, they were able to maintain a substantial armoury of various sorts of wargear to use when required, to adapt to the situation at hand. Whenever a piece of armour was damaged a proper replacement could easily be requisitioned, allowing for maximum effectiveness of the Astartes on the field. Over time however, as the Alfa Legion grew in size and strength, more and more of the armoury was given over to the new Legionnaires even as new armour, weapons and ammunition is built and made ready. As the demand grew, a need for a temporary measure was required. To give time for the armoury to build up again and to be able to equip new generations.
Thus, older marks - MK6 to MK4 - was released for wartime usage by the Armoury. Even now, it is not uncommon for Legionnaires to stand in rank and file, with various sorts of power armour making them stand out a bit. The measure worked, and even now it is still in effect as the Armoury works to fill its halls with more equipment for current and future Legionnaires, as well as spares for replacement.
The Forge’s duty itself revolves around providing more specialised support as opposed to the mass production, although it is not an exception to this. Refitting and maintaining specialised equipment such as power weapons and armour consume much of the day for Techmarines and Tech-Priests within the Forge Facility as does tending for the Legion’s vehicles.
The Techmarines of the Alfa Legion Forge are in many ways similar to their kin in other Chapters. While these base assumptions are correct, under the surface however the Alfa Legion Techmarines are on average a different breed to their counterparts elsewhere.
The relations between the Alfa Legion and the Adeptus Mechanicus are something along the lines of a father and his estranged second cousin twice-removed, both of whom get along by not acknowledging the other except when they have to. Despite this, the Alfa Legion keeps up the millennium old tradition of sending its human recruits to learn the secrets of the Machine on Mars for thirty years or if the situation does not allow for this, another Forge world. This is one of the few ties the Alfa Legion Forge holds with famous Adeptus Mechanicus.
In most Space Marine Chapters, the Techmarines are viewed with a mixture of suspicion and aversion by their brothers. In the Alfa Legion this role is almost reversed with many in the Forge looking upon other Alfa Legionaries with what can be surmised as a sense of curiosity and superiority. This attitude is mainly due to the rigorous training regime that potential Techmarines undertake which attempts, and in most cases succeeds, to stamp out any ‘illogical’ tendancies that the Legionnaire may have. Thus when these trainees return to Swedesia, they are exposed to the unique and bizarre nature of their comrades, seeing them as being somewhat simple compared to themselves.
In terms of manufacturing, the bulk of the Forge is geared towards the Adeptus Astartes with very little going towards the human population of Swedesia. Each bolt round fired by the Alfa Legion in combat originates from within the Forge of the Fortress-Monastery as do many of the bolters themselves. Larger pieces such as Rhinos or Predators are often shipped down from Ikeaus and assembled by the Tech Marines of the Forge.
Besides these functions, the Alfa Legion Forge is also responsible for training the Legion’s techmarines and assigning them to one of the twelve companies. This process is initially undertaken in the usual manner with potential novices being sent to Mars to study for many years by skilled Magos. Once they return however the Forge employs a deliberate process of “un-Marsing” them, reintroducing them back into the slightly more unorthodox operations of the Alfa Legion Forge.
Due to the less than orthodox nature of the Alfa Legion Forge, two major separate ideological camps have formed over time. Members of these work together on a day to day basis as their schedules demand however out of that context their attitudes can vary. More zealous members of one can outright ignore members of the other whilst more moderate members are barely indistinguishable from their counterparts.
The Purists are your stereotypical Mechanicus followers, devoting themselves to the standard Martian ideology. These individuals would be right at home on most Forge Worlds away from the Alfa Legion. The group is mainly comprised of Tech-Priests from various backgrounds with the odd Techmarine thrown into the mix. Due to the lack of Techmarines in the group it will be rare to find a Purist Master of the Forge with only a few noticeable cases recorded.
The Gustavian faction of the Alfa Legion Forge is more wayward than their puritanical kin, advocating for the use of more unorthodox tactics if the situation calls for it. Named after a great and renown Master of the Forge who followed this ideology, this faction is highly popular among the Alfa Legion Techmarines who embrace these unusual tactics for use on the battlefield. Whilst not descending into outright Tech-Heresy, it is not uncommon for followers of the Gustavian ideal to balance on the line between committing serious heresies. Due to this, members of the Gustavian faction have become well used to cleansing their ranks from within, ensuring that none of their brethren go too far down the line of heresy. Many of the Masters of the Forge in history were Gustavian including Delred, the current holder of that hallowed title.
An offshoot of the Gustavian faction are the Radical Gustavians or just Radical. This minority represent those individuals who handle Xenos technology and sometimes advocate for its usage although that view is understandably kept hidden from most outside their faction.
Not widely talked of is a third and far minor faction that only existed for a short period of history. Now nameless, the faction took their name from the infamous renegade Tech-Priest, Khypic. This group was formed by the previous Master of the Forge and several of his close associates whom had fallen to heretical temptations of power and knowledge. Eventually the subversive group was thoroughly purged from the Alfa Legion and their legacy scrubbed clean from the Forge, a warning to any who would seek to stray far from the path..
