The overall summary of Chapter Master Alfarion and the Alfa Legion's founding
WARNING: This page is riddled with mystery, half-truths and sausage-works, take it all with a grain of salt.
Alfarion is one of the Chapter's well-known heroes, said to have been the first Chapter Master of the Alfa Legion. Although he has been credited to be the founding father of the Chapter - the details of his life, along with the details of the Chapter's early history and what happened before the founding is scarcely known, next to their unknown Primarch in terms of their anonymity and mystery.
Of anything that can give a clue as to who Alfarion was, very little remained. But unknown to everyone else, the Chapter Master (Alfabusa) - and subsequently, the branch of the Inquisition watching the Alfa Legion very closely known as the Ordo Alfus - know of the truth, and dared not reveal it to anyone if they could help it.
Alfarion was a Lord Commander in the Alpha Legion during the Great Crusade - although in typical Alpha Legion fashion, his accomplishments are of mere rumour. It was not known how many worlds he has brought into compliance, or what accomplishments he did. But what was known however, was that at some point, in the outbreak of the Horus Heresy, he took with him Three Hosts - Three Chapters worth of Astartes, and broke away from the Alpha Legion in what appeared to be a rebellion against their Primarch. The reason as to why he did this, or how he had managed to accomplish that is a mystery - but it is known that at the end of the Horus Heresy, around 1,000 Astartes remained from that original loyalist host survived, including Alfarion. 12 Companies total - and some of them below full-strength.
These survivors would be put on trial in place of their own Legion - because Guilliman felt being like a dick at the time, almost certainly - but Russ intervened. Some say that the loyalist Alpha Legionnaires helped his own out somewhere and he wanted to return the favour. Other accounts tell that Russ thought that Guilliman was being too much of a dick to the loyalist Alpha Legionnaires and thus decided to step up for them.
In any case, the loyalist Legionnaires were allowed to live - under the condition that Russ would keep an eye on them, which he did. By the time the Second Founding happened, the loyalist Legionnaires split off from the Space Wolves to forge a new Chapter - with a slightly changed name intentioned to mock their former Legion, and to supposedly boost Alfarion's ego.
The Inquisition, paranoid as they were, ended up founding the Ordo Alfus of course - to keep an eye on the Alfa Legion, lest they end up repeating what Alpharius Omegon ended up doing...
Eventually Alfarion would die as all Astartes (If not all, then most) die; in battle. He fell in battle against the Forces of the Alpha Legion - a shot to the skull. Serves him right for not taking the precaution of wearing a helmet - although one has to wonder how someone was able to get around to shoot at him from behind, not to mention then slaughter his bodyguards, leaving no witnesses. Agents of The Inquisition - that were part of the battle - attempted an investigation at the request of the Alfa Legion, but could not find any evidence as to how the Alpha Legion somehow managed to sneak up behind their lines, if they were behind the supposed quick assassination.
Regardless, after that battle, the Alfa Legion chose a new Chapter Master amongst the current roster of Captains at the time - and to keep their first Chapter Master in memory, as well as for the sake of cool, he adopted the "Alfa" and interred it into his own. Thus began the tradition of every single Chapter Master having "Alfa" as part of their first names somehow.
